TonSai Bay and DWS!!!

I (Lockey again) woke up nice and early and had a chat with a german guy named Dominic, and then made my way to Tonsai Basecamp to sign up for Deep Water Soloing (DWS). Deep water soloing is climbing, but without ropes or harnesses and over water so that you you don’t die when you fall, but just get a good back or belly flop mark if you hit the water wrong. The guy at the climbing shop’s name was Ip - like half of the other guys we had met in Thailand - and he said we needed eight people for him to take us go DWSing.

He said he had 5 people already so that with us it was seven and we only needed to find one more. So, I woke Cami up and we had a terrible AMERICAN breakfast because it was the only thing included - ugh. - Just eat what the locals eat cause their version of american breakfast isn’t terrible. - Also there were lots of wasps that really liked Cami, but didn’t like me so much. So Cami got herself a banana sticky rice from the Crazy Amazing Ladies in the alley rather than eating the gross hot dog and greasy eggs.... Delicious.

When we got back to Basecamp, we were the only ones there and the owner really didn’t want to go, so he gave us two topos - pictures of the climbing areas - and told us to go find a boat. So we got a private boat and told the driver where to go. After driving though a bunch of cool islands we saw some people playing on the rocks. The climbs ranged from 5.7 to 5.13. However, what no one failed to mention was that getting up the ladder was half the work out. So I dove in first and climbed one of the easier ones. I made it to the top and only after a little hesitation I made the 10-15m plunge off of the top of it.

I remember jumping off of the 10m board at Lindsay Park without it being that big of a deal, but this was a lot scarier and hurt a lot more for some reason. Anyway, then it was Cami’s turn, she was more into traversing (climbing sideways on the rock) and she jumped from about 8 meters and then we rotated sitting in the water with a life jacket diaper style and taking pictures of eachother. Here are a couple examples.

Cami Shredding It!!!

Going Up!

Pretty Camera Frame
We climbed probably 5 or 6 climbs and then we noticed that the other boat that was there, started to take down the ladder. Apparently you have to BRING YOUR OWN LADDER!!! No one told us about that, but luckily for us they were off to another location and we finished up the one that I could reach without his ladder and followed them to the next area, which was a lot higher and a lot more difficult, even the beginning was probably 15-20 feet off of the water. Anyway, so I played there for a little bit (Cami was a great photographer for this portion) and no one got hurt and it was a great time.

Second Area

After having our driver drive us to yet another beautiful island to chill out for a bit, we went back to Tonsai for some good eats from the two crazy ladies. These girls are awesome and one of them snuck a side hug from me and giggled about it. Again the food was delicious and they just whip it up on a hot plate for 50baht, or 1.50CAD. Delicious. Also, we love Thai sticky rice, (which we bought from them more than once...) it is delicious, warm sticky sweet rice with banana = delicious dessert. Then we were off to bed.

Yummy food from the Crazy Ladies
