Singapore Sling! (didn't try it....)

Singapore sling is the famous cocktail of Singapore.  A place called Raffles invented it, and apparently it costs $30 for 1!!! Apparently they make a virgin version (try saying that 10 times fast!) Too expensive for our tastes.... But...

There were LOTS of cool things to see in one night!
We saw "The Biggest Fountain in the WORLD"... it was the fountain of wealth, and it was ginormous, it wasn't doing a show when we saw it, but people would go down and touch the mini fountain below us hoping to become prosperous... but you had to pay to get in... so then you're losing money... That's a head scratcher!

Around the fountain were all of the chinese zodiac signs... Lockey is a Dog...

I'm an Ox... (I have seen this pose in another picture... from a rodeo?  with the Effers? :)

You can find out what you are and what your characteristics are by going to this website http://www.chinesezodiac.com/calculator.php
It's pretty crazy how accurate some of it is... and how inaccurate some of it is too... but it's fun!

We continued walking to Marina Bay... it's the new cool place in Singapore (So our taxi driver told us... Oh PS in Bali they spelled "taxi" like this: Teksi.... it was sweet.)

In the above picture you can see the Art and Science Museum (The white seashell/egg/flower looking building.) And the "Ferry Wheel" again our taxi drivers words... And then the observatory is that ship structure connecting the 3 towers.  And below that is a huge mall and theatre... The Lion King was playing, but the cheap seats were sold out... bummer...)

We settled for looking at the Merlion..... almost as cool as Lion King.

And Lockey really liked the sailboat behind us, it was very sleek.

It was the last day of Ramadan when we got to Singapore, (as well as the first day of the Mid Autumn Festival)  So there were LOTS of people on the streets having picnics and breaking their fasts.  regarding all of the Indian people we saw, the women were all sitting together eating and the men all hung out w/out the women, holding hands and taking glamour shots by the harbour... not joking. It's very common in their culture for men to hug, and hold hands and such, which I don't find offensive or wrong at all, you just don't see it in the Western world.  We also noticed the separation of men and women in Bali and Thailand.  It's interesting b/c I am reading a book called "Committed" by Elizabeth Gilbert, and she discusses this a lot as she's travelling around East Asia on a mission to figure out Love and Marriage.

Oh and in the afternoon we also tried our first ice cream sandwich... Literally.  It was a slice of bread (green and pink in colour)  with chocolate, sweet corn and plum ice-cream in it... And the sweet corn was delish!  And it was only $1.  Can't go wrong my friends!

We went to a mall (one of the SEVERAL that connect w/ the subway and underground passageways... it's basically like a kingdom underground.)  And in the centre they had all sorts of "As seen on TV"... Asians LOVE this stuff!!! They take it seriously... Lockey and I may have been mocking it, but I think that I really could benefit from this one contraption that would make my posture better... It really worked!  (But I could just see the velcro snapping halfway through the day and then I'd have wings under my shirt.... It kinda looks like a medical contraption actually...)

We took a taxi back to out hotel and our taxi driver told us about the Mid Autumn festival going on.  (Taxi drivers are a fountain of knowledge!)  He told us just to walk down our street to China Town and that we would find the festival of lanterns!  These were no regular Lanterns!!

~I think I'm a very convincing dragon~

So at the festival they eat "mooncakes"... I found a link w/ recipes and the explanation of the celebration... if you want to read it then have a gander!

We also had to buy tokens to try some of the street food, we had some great pumpkin prawns... Lockey is eating his here... look how happy he is!

~ a Huge Lantern~
They of course have all sorts of American food here, but Lockey and I especially found this funny, for anyone who is a Dane cook fan, we found a "BK Lounge"!  Well almost...

~Lockey playing amidst the fountains at the river walk~

~Night view of the Marina~

~another night view of the Marina... opposite side... ~
We came upon a little stage where there was live music, all American songs, except for the last song which was a Malaysian song about Ramadan, she was a great musician and it was a great place to rest our feet!

On our way to the Airport this morning we saw a crazy golf course, which I wish I had gotten a picture of for my dad, perhaps he's even heard of it already, but it's CRAZY!!! There were hills everywhere!  Big hills little hills... hills hills hills!!  Anyways, you should check out the website poohead... I think you'd be 5 under par ;)

Also, at the Singapore airport the "Budget" airlines have their very own terminal!  It was actually rad, it took us no time at all to check in, there was NO line at security and where they check your passports they had a candy bowl, and the security guards SMILED at me and told me to have a nice day... THAT is service!

A sign that Lockey saw on our plane to Singapore... Bahaha!

And now we are off to Hong Kong!  Lockey starts school tomorrow, he's not sure what to expect, but he'll definitely keep everyone posted!

  2. Hey!!! You should totally read it Kelly, there were a few parts I even read out to Lockey, she spoke very eloquently about how there are just some things that she loves, that her significant other doesn't love and he will never want to do, and vice versa, and about compromise and understanding, as well as she gives some outlook into other cultures marriage traditions and ideas. It kind of seems like an essay at the beginning, but I ended up really enjoying it, and yes I did read Eat Pray Love (Also this trip) and it's written quite differently, while giving stats and essay type writing at the beginning, but then seems to revert back to her story telling writing moreso at the end... anyways, it wasn't my FAVORITE book every, but definitely had some good points about marriage, a lot which Lockey and I had already figured out, and some that were just written in a way that was new and interesting, it would be good to read before getting hitched ;) that's the longest comment ever! Ha!
